Insects are a class of arthropods. They possess Chitinous exoskeleton and have 3 pairs of jointed legs, 3-part body, two antennae and compound eyes. The insects comprise of half of the entire known population of living organisms and they have no less than a million species. They also comprise ninety percent of total Metazoan life. Furthermore, they can be found in any sort of environment. Yet, they are lesser in number in oceans.

Their lifecycles also differ from each other in many cases, but a common one is laying eggs. The immature state of an insect can be entirely different from an adult. One of the very good examples is a butterfly. If we look at the past, then the fossils of various insects show that the size of many may have been approximately 55-70 cm. the most common movements in insects is flying, walking or swimming/sinking. They also designated to be the only invertebrates that underwent evolution to fly.

Amazingly, one of the specie called water striders can walk on the water surface. This means that insects are capable of doing a lot more than what can be imagined. Generally, they are solitary types, but a few species do socialize, for example ants, bees and termites. They live in defined and organized colonies. Their mode of communication also depicts a wide variety. A few of these species are considered as pests as they can damage crops, cattle as well human health and hence, they are controlled to an extent by making using of insecticides.
